Why this Project?

To identify how genes modify radiosensitivity in subgroups of the human population.

Project Goals:

To determine if radio-sensitivity can be produced by interaction between multiple abnormal genes.

Experimental Approach:

Dr. Hall will compare the sensitivity of cells from ATM knockout and double knockout mice to the sensitivity of cells from wild type mice. Mice that are heterozygous for Mrad9, BRCA2, BRCA1 and ATM will be bred to produce cells with a number of double heterozygotes, such as ATM /het /Mrad9/het . The project will measure oncogenic transformation in cultured embryo fibroblasts derived from these genetically unique mice to determine radio-sensitivity.

Expected Outcomes:

Identification of single and combinations of genetic factors that predispose cells to radiation-induced deleterious health effects provides a basis for predicting increased sensitivity in human subgroups with similar genetic make up.
